Essentially, you are preserving every other step, but using the native macOS bootloader one last time before you install the Linux OS, and merely to boot the install disk. However, I have only had success with this as a last resort and when refind was already preinstalled onto the macOS volume. Different way of booting install CD / drive / etc.Ī few times, I have booted into Linux using the alt key instead of refind. Other considerations below.Īlternate Step 3. Select the Linux OS distribution at the refind bootloader menu. Open Terminal and do the following: cd ~/Downloads/refind-bin-0.10.4 Reboot machine and hold down command-R.Re-run refind and remove original config and create new config There are numerous tutorials on this, but I recommend setting up a minimum of 4 partitions for boot, root, home, and var. This will require you to set up your partitions manually in the text based installer. Install guest OS and be careful to select the partition correctly. You may see more than one - choose the one with the EFI naming convention. The refind bootloader will recognize the grub bootloader. Once you log in, enter the CD, or the flash drive for the Linux distribution you are choosing.

Power up the machine - it will now use refind bootloader - pick the Mac OS X option with arrow keys. Open Terminal, and run the following commands: cd ~/Downloads/refind-bin-0.10.4 Reboot the mac and hold down command-R for restore. In macOS, navigate to reind download page and download refind to your Downloads folder.Upon reboot, run Disk Utility, and add only one partition to the drive for your Linux OS.In your case, it will probably restore to OS X Lion. Once restored, let it update fully and then reboot patient and update everything on macOS first.Reboot the machine, hold down command-R, and restore macOS (it may say OS X).Overall, I would recommend using the third party option, and specifically refind. Moreover, since you report that the text-based installer works, I would argue that there is no conflict with the graphics card. The default EFI and bootloader on macOS will not allow booting without modification by a third party bootloader, or an arduous manual booting process every time you restart. I confirmed this by reading the log output as it froze. The system also loads the OS, and the OS crashes. Both the HDMI port and DisplayPort over Thunderbolt are hardwired to the AMD chip.Įdit: I should have mentioned that I can install fine on my MacBook Air. Is there any option to fix this? From what I understand, the graphics card can't be bypassed to use the Intel integrated graphics (which is what I would do if I could). Which indicates it is an Ubuntu-specific problem (at least, it does to me). Worth noting is the fact that Debian installs and runs fine.

From the boot logs when booting this with a monitor connected, I determined it was something to do with the graphics drivers not loading properly. I'd kind of like to have a GUI on it, so this really isn't much of an option for me. If I use the non-graphical install media, it installs fine but refuses to boot after.Īlso, the server edition boots fine without a monitor connected, and I can connect one after, but no GUI will boot (obviously, it's a server). However, as soon as I boot to the graphical install media, it freezes. I'm trying to install Ubuntu on an old Mac Mini from 2011, with an i7 processor and an AMD graphics card. I have a weird problem that I've never seen any documentation about.
